Ehud Barak
He denied having told a journalist in an interview that if he were an Iranian, he would have also wanted a nuclear bomb. He said he only meant that hypothetically, and added that he was not deluded into considering that Iran is getting ready a bomb for Israel alone.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) proposed a meeting next week, attended by representatives of Arab countries and Israel, where a proposition to install a nuclear-free-zone in the Middle East will be made, following the proposal made on various occasions by the Egyptian leaders.
On Friday, the UN agency’s 35-nation board is expected to vote on a resolution condemning the Iranian nuclear ambitions, and imposing more drastic sanctions, as a means of avoiding military confrontation.
The resolution however is said to be much more moderate than the initial report which alluded to the fact that Iran was conducting experiments to create a nuclear bomb. The moderation of the wording in the resolution is seen as a concession to China and Russia, which expressed on more than one occasion their opposition to another round of sanctions against the regime.
The United States and its allies wanted a harsh resolution to condemn Iran’s nuclear preoccupation, in hopes that it would send a message strong enough to Tehran to discourage them from proceeding. Still, confronted with the Russian and Chinese position, they had to compromise, fearing that otherwise the resolution would fail, and Iran would get the message that they have their back covered.
In any event, some consider that after four rounds of sanctions that proved totally ineffective, Tehran’s nuclear program is too far advanced to be stopped by another round.
The text, as it will be presented to be voted on Friday, speaks of deep concern over the military aspects of the nuclear program Iran is conducting and that there are aspects in the nuclear program that need to be clarified so that any doubt concerning a military aspect of such program be eliminated.
For the first time the agency speaks of the military dimension of the program, alluding that all information about such a dimension is credible.
Israel reacted to the information that Iran is conducing nuclear tests to build nuclear weapons with a proposal to attack Iranian nuclear facilities. For that matter, Israeli prime minister and defense minister have begun a campaign to convince the other members of the government and the Western allies to attack Iran.
According to the British officials, there a possibility that the attack may occur until the end of December. Experts believe that Iran may have this kind of weapons by April 2012, which leaves the Israeli army a window of opportunity that will close my late March.
The United States favors the idea of applying economic sanctions on the Islamic regime, considering that this would make the regime crumble, which is very much unlikely, considering that it has survived for years.
It is considered that an attack on Iran would complicate the chances of the president Obama to be reelected after a first term with important domestic difficulties, and with a promise to change America’s implication in military campaigns that have little chance of success.
Analysts believe that it would be the first time in its history that America must take into account the possibility of not being able to sustain financially such a campaign. Yet, it is widely believed that if Israel starts such a campaign, the United States would help the Jewish state against response Iran may create.
Different Iranian officials have been quoted over the last few days threatening to destroy Israel, and attack American interests in Europe or in the Mediterranean, which could give more substance to Barak’s warning that the Iranian case concerns the entire civilized world, not merely Israel.
In a gesture of protest against Israel’s intentions to launch an attack on their nuclear facilities, Iranian students formed human chains around the nuclear facilities, threatening to defend them with their lives.
