Syrian Attack Stalled by Snowstorm, Qatari PM Demands Arab Military Intervention
Attack In Syria
An attack of the Syrian forces on the restive city of Zabadani, a town with 40,000 people near the Lebanese border, was stalled because of a snowstorm and the military resistance the troops encountered, Syrian opposition reported. This was the biggest assault on rebels since the Arab League observers began their work in Syria on December 26 in an attempt to assess whether the country is complying with the peace plan agreed.
The security forces killed on Friday 12 people, including a 6-year-old girl as they are trying to crush a rebellion that has been going on for the last 10 months against the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. According to state-run news agency SANA the “terrorists” killed six soldiers and policemen.
With the Arab League mission criticized by all, from the members of the mission who catalogued it as a “farce,” to the opposition, who criticized the fact that it is led by Sudanese general Al-Dabi, on whom there is suspicion of involvement in the Darfur genocide, to the US State Secretary Hillary Clinton, who thinks it is a failure, the Cairo-based pan-Arab body decided to increase the number of the observers by 40 people, who will join the 165 already in the field.
There is concern that the conflict in Syria could slide into a civil war, since the number of the people who died among the security forces was of 2,000 people.
The Qatari prime minister said that Arab troops should be sent to Syria to stop the crackdown that is said to have killed 5,000 people.
