At least 120 people were killed on Friday, according to witnesses, in the northern city of Kano, Nigeria, as Islamist militants launched coordinated attacks on police stations. Hospitals and mortuaries are said to struggle to deal with the number of people who are still being brought in.
The city was placed under 24-hour curfew, as a series of explosions ripped apart police stations. Boko Haram has announced that they were responsible for the attacks. According to a hospital in the city 143 people died.
Red Cross has told Agence France Press that on Saturday morning 121 corpses were removed from the streets.
Boko Haram is an Islamic organization which militates for the installation of a Muslim state in the northern part of Nigeria, with shariah as source of the law. Boko Haram translates “The Western education is sinful.” The Islamist group is said to have ties with al-Qaeda, and has been behind attacks on police and government buildings since 2009.
In 2011, Boko Haram has attacked bars and restaurants in a bid to convince their own Muslim people not to drink alcohol beverages and have other Western customs. During the Christmas they threw bombs in Christian churches as the people were celebrating the birth of Christ.
Even so, the attack on Friday seems to be the deadliest attack staged by Boko Haram. The attack is said to have destroyed four police stations, and buildings of the State Security Service.
