Russia Warns Georgia Against Hosting U.S. Anti-Missile Shield
Saakashvili Worried
Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili said on Friday that he was not afraid of the threat Russian president was making against Georgia, saying that they were worthless and made by people confronted with the prospect of “the country collapsing on their heads.”
Saakashvili refers to the words of the prime minister Vladimir Putin, who, on January 18, met with a group of thirty Russian editors, and raised the issue of Georgia without anyone asking him about it.
The prime minister said on that occasion that no one could be sure whether the Americans would place or not their defense shield system in Georgia. Putin said that if this were the case, it would be a “horror” and would put Russia in the position of aiming its “offensive system” on Georgia.
Putin brought the Georgian case in connection to a member of the League of Voters, one of whose members was the Georgian novelist Boris Akunin, whose vision was based, Putin said, on the August 2008 war on Georgia.
The president hopeful Vladimir Putin reminded that the war on Georgia was to protect the South Ossetians and the Russian peacekeepers who were being slaughtered by the Georgian troops.
Putin asked rhetorically what should have Russia done under the circumstances and added that he was ready to talk with the people in Georgia, and reminded that Russia had negotiations with Georgian people, and with Georgian intellectuals and with Georgian opposition.
Russia is very sensitive about the U.S. anti-missile defense system, which was deployed in Poland and Romania, triggering the anger of the authorities in Moscow.
Russia invaded Georgia in August 2008, in a war that lasted a few days, and had as consequences the break away of the Georgian provinces Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which became independent, though they were not recognized by any other country.
