Mention Dubai and the image most people conjure up is one of shiny shopping malls, sky-piercing architecture, opulent hotels and a dazzling array of dining options, clubs and bars. A paradise for city sophisticates and shopaholics, but with little to offer people who like the great outdoors or local culture.
But this impression is deceptive. There are lots of exciting things to do in Dubai that take the visitor behind the city’s glossy veneer to enjoy a range of different experiences.

You could take an afternoon and evening tour and be back in your hotel by midnight or you could choose to camp out overnight under the desert stars.
Exploring the desert in a 4×4 vehicle is an exhilarating experience. Crossing the great sea of dunes, some hundreds of feet high, is like riding a roller coaster. Marvel at the skill of your expert driver as the rugged vehicle plunges into the hollows and scrambles up the peaks.
Most Dubai desert safaris will take you to a Bedouin campsite tucked away in the depths of the desert. Here you have the chance to participate in all kinds of fun activities. You could fly down the dunes on a sand board, or enjoy a “Lawrence of Arabia” moment by taking a camel ride. To complete the desert experience you can put on traditional Arab dress and acquire some body art in the form of an authentic henna tattoo.
As the sun drops towards the horizon you can watch the changing colours of the desert sunset. Have your camera ready as the sky glows with brilliant shades of tangerine and egg-yolk yellow, fading to mauve and purples as dusk falls over the dunes.
During the evening you may be treated to a belly dancing show and barbecue and have the chance to smoke a hubbly-bubbly pipe under the glorious desert stars.
