Sarkozy Is Running for a Second Term In Office
Nicolas Sarkozy
French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday officially launched his bid for a new term in office during an interview with French television, when he said he wanted to propose the French people new solutions for the economic crisis France and Europe are facing right now.
Sarkozy is facing a difficult task as he attempts to get reelected, because his popularity is down to one third of the population, and the failure to reduce unemployment to 5% and the rise of public debt by 40% are likely to make him the unpopular candidate.
Bearing that in mind, Sarkozy is basing his entire campaign on the international achievements of the country, mainly at European level. He brought to his side Angela Merkel, in a bid that came to be called the “Merkozy campaign,” intended to tell the French people that keeping the same team at the helm of the European Union is the winning solution for the crisis the continent is going through.
Analysts believe that this move is meant to transfer to the French president some of the good image the German chancellor has in her country and in Europe. It is believed that such a move could impact positively on the conservative people in France but could also have a backfiring effect, as some could see it as an intrusion into French affairs.
France has also engaged on the international arena in conflicts such as the one in Libya, where it led the fight against the regime of Muammar al-Qaddafi. In Syria, foreign minister Juppe is supporting the idea of creating a corridor to help the people that have been under intense governmental crackdown for the last 11 months.
Sarkozy made a very strong point of condemning the genocide of Armenians, committed by the Ottoman Empire at the end of the WWI. The bill passed by the French parliament is said to win over the 500,000 Armenians in France, but strained the ties between France and Turkey.
The presidential elections are scheduled for April 22, and possible runoffs could happen on May 6, if no candidate gathers majority. According to surveys, if elections were to be held now the contender Socialist Francois Hollande would gather 28 percent in the first round, and would win in runoffs by 57% to 43%.
Sarkozy, with a 30-year experience in the field of politics, is said to be far behind in the presidential race. He must gain on his Socialist contender by placing himself on the offensive.
The main charge the center-right president is expected to bring against the Socialists is that their vision of economic and social matters is obsolete, and would not make a good pair with the German counterpart in solving the pressing European crisis.
The contender Francois Hollande won the primary elections in France and became the official nominee of the party, after the weird and unexpected political end of career Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former head of the International Monetary Fund, had.
DSK’s string of accusations related to sexual abuses, and the strange episode in New York City, when the powerful man was displayed in front of the worldwide public in shackles, being accused of having aggressed a housekeeper at a hotel, were related by many to the presidential campaign in France.
DSK was viewed as the man capable to beat Sarkozy in elections without any problem, and some went as far as to say that he was framed so that he may lose confidence of the French constituents. No prove was presented to support this claim.
