Jason Russell, the filmmaker who created the viral “Kony 2012” video that was seen by tens of millions on Youtube, suffered from “reactive psychosis” last week during a bizarre incident in San Diego, when the police were called.
The information was released by his wife and other members of the family, who issued a statement on Wednesday saying that he received treatment from doctors. The family said that his preliminary diagnosis is called brief reactive psychosis, an acute state brought on by the extreme exhaustion, dehydration, and stress.
The family added that it is a common experience considering the great mental, emotional, and physical shock his body has been through over the last two weeks.
Russell, 33, was taken by San Diego police to a mental-health facility after the neighbors reported that he was walking naked in the streets, pounding his fist against the sidewalk and speaking incoherently.
Police said they responded to callers who said he had taken away his clothes, Los Angeles Times reports. When the police arrived, he was wearing underwear, police reported. His wife Danica Russell said that it was possible that the criticism of the film he had made about the Ugandan criminal against humanity Joseph Kony could have contributed to the weird behavior of the filmmaker.
The family said that Russell dedicated his adult life to bringing Joseph Kony before judges, and it was expected that only a few thousands would view it, but in turn millions saw it in a few days.
Critics said he misstated the level of violence in Uganda, the whereabouts of Kony, and the strength of his militia.
The Ugandan government issued a video of its own, which conveys the message that Uganda is no longer the violent country that it was during Kony’s days. The prime minister of Uganda said that Russell’s video omitted the most important information: that Kony was no longer on Ugandan territory, and that the country was doing its best to find him and hand him over to the judicial authorities.
The prime minister also said that Uganda was now an emerging democracy, where security of life has improved considerably, and that Kony’s militia was no longer a threat, as its followers are no more than 200 to 250 fighters operating in the jungle.
Joseph Kony is the brain behind the terrorist organization called Lord’s Resistance Army, which operated between 1987 and 2005 in Uganda, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The LRA is said to be an organization aiming to create some sort of a theocratic state in the part of Uganda where the Acholi ethnic group resides. Based on the Ten Commandments and the Acholi nationalism, LRA is said to have been operating under the leadership of Joseph Kony, who fancies himself some sort of incarnation of the Holy Spirit.
The organization is considered responsible for the abduction of 66,000 children, which were forced into slavery or participating to military operations as soldiers. Two million people were displaced by the actions of LRA.
Kony was issued an international arrest warrant in his name in 2005, but since then he has eluded the search for his capture. In the 9-minute “correction” video uploaded by Ugandan government, the defense minister of the country is saying that four nations have formed a task forces whose responsibility was to hunt Kony down and arrest him.
