Sabine Lisicki has won her second title of the term after easing past Aravane Rezai 6-2, 6-1 in the Dallas final. The German, winner of the Birmingham event, needed just 50 minutes to clinch the title, giving the French no chance to break through.
An impressive 84 service percentage as well as four precious breaks propelled the fifth seed towards a comprehensive win, he second over Rezai who has only defeated the German once. Lisicki created five break point chances, missing just one of them in the opener.
On the other side, Rezai, who was chasing her first success of the season, did not build any break point opportunity allowing the world number 23 rally past her very easily. Lisicki thus picked a couple of breaks in the first set and two more in the second part which she dominated at all facets.
Lisicki won at the same time 52 percent of return points and hit 57 winners, compared to the world number 114 who provided a poor 16 return percentage, a 48 service one. Rezai hit 29 winners of 86 possible, committing at the same time four double faults.
The head to head series between the two have now gone 2-1 to the German whose only defeat comes from the 2009 Bali event. Rezai also failed to win her fifth career singles title, allowing the German to win her third one. Apart from this year’s Birmingham success, she also came first at the 2007 Charleston tournament.
“I was really looking forward to another final. It has been an incredible week, and an incredible three months. I’ve picked up my game again and am playing so well… I really had to hang in there in the beginning. Aravane’s a tough player. You can’t have any letdowns or else she’ll play very well – she can really go for her shots,” said the German after the victory.
Lisicki had previously crashed Irina Begu 6-0, 6-1 in the semi final, Kateryna Bondarenko 6-1, 6-2 in the final eight term, Alberta Brianti 6-1, 6-2 and Sania Mirza 6-3, 6-0 in the opening term. So, she finished the week with the sheet clean, a unique performance for the 22 year old who is to become a main seed at the upcoming American Grand Slam.
As for Rezai, she had eliminated Angelique Kerber 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the last four term, Elena Baltacha 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter finals, Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 7-6 in the second term and Magdalena Rybarikova 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opener. Lisicki is to pocket $37,000 and receive 280 points WTA, while Rezai earned $19,000 and 200 points.
The German has already lined up for the US Open and will meet Alonda Bondarenko in the first term. Rezai will face Flavia Pennetta on the same second half of the table.
