Belgium Grand Prix on Sunday. The 24 year old stopped the clock at one hour 26 minutes and 44, 893 seconds, being followed by team mate Mark Webber who brought Red Bull the Spa double
Vettel, who started from pole position, dominated the entire race, managing even to set the best lap time late in it. Webber overcame a one position deficit, coming second, 3,741 seconds behind the German after a tough fight with both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. The Briton left the Spaniard behind him with a couple of laps remaining, setting a 9,669 second gap against the leader.
Alonso, who has not won a title so far this season, fell 13,022 seconds behind Vettel against whom he had set a three gap earlier in the race. The biggest surprise and one of the most remarkable performances came from the former world champion, winner of the 2004 Spa edition, Michael Schumacher. The German, who started from the last position, came the fifth fastest, 47,464 seconds behind Vettel.
He was followed by team mate Nico Rosberg who came one second slower than him. Adrian Sutil of Force India also impressed on Sunday’s race, coming seventh with a 59,713 second gap. Felipe Massa, Vitaly Petrov of Renault and Williams’ Pastor Maldonado came well behind, setting a 1+ minute gap.
Paul di Resta, Kamui Kobayashi and Bruno Senna set a one second and a half gap, while six other drivers, including Lotus’ Truli and Heikki Kovalainen as well as Williams’ Rubens Barrichello, Virgin’s Jerome d’Ambrosio and Timo Glock, and Vitantino Liuzzi.
Five drivers did not finish the race, including Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton, and both Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.
Said Vettel after winning the race: “We had a lot of concerns going into the race after qualifying and weren’t quite sure about the tyres blistering. The team took the risk and we had reason to be confident, but you never know until you get out there.”
Webber complained about some radio problems which – according to his words – affected his performances. “I kept asking ‘do you want me to stop’ and heard nothing. I could have had a fight with Seb through the middle of the race,” he said.
With seven races remaining, Vettel leads the overall standings with 259 points, being followed by Webber with 167. Fernando Alonso, who still chases a title, is third with 157 points, while McLaren’s Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are fourth and fifth with 149 and 146 points respectively.
Felipe Massa, who won four points at the Spa, is sixth with 74 points, 18 ahead of Nico Rosberg. German’s team mate Schumacher, who won ten points on Sunday, has climbed eighth with 42 points. Renault occupy the next two positions with Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfield sitting ninth and tenth with 34 points, each.
The next Grand Prix takes place in Monza, Italy between September 9 – 11, being followed by the Singapore GP scheduled on September 23 – 25.
