Red Sox thwart Rangers to go top
Ellsbury was the first to put the away side into the lead after Pedroia singled to left in the first term. Gonzalez then doubled the minimal advantage, following Ortiz’s singling as Red Sox were suggesting a big win in Arlington. Pedroia and Ortiz managed to extend the lead to four points minutes later as Rangers were still struggling for a break through.
The second term saw the same Boston go well ahead of the hosts thanks to Ellsbury who made it 5-0 after Pedroia singled to left, having Gonzalez to second. The early rally was ended by McDonald who scored a sixth one after Scutaro doubled to left.
Texas’ first reply came in the same fourth term through Napoli who fired a 408 homerun which arouse Red Sox’s second consistent run. The newly East leaders would score seven points in a row, without allowing her opponents to score any point until the last but one term. Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to right as Ortiz started the new rally with a seventh point.
Ellsbury, who fired a 412 foot homerun, and McDonald then brought Rangers an eight point deficit they couldn’t cut any shorter. But on the contrary, they allowed Boston score two doubles in the seven and eighth term respectively. Crawford hit a 413 footer, while Lowrie followed him with an 11th one. Gonzalez then hit a 410 foot homerun, being followed by Scutaro who made it 13-1 in the eighth inning.
Rangers’ last consolation point came in the same term through Andrus who struggled to make the loss more bearable. Said manager Washington after Texas’ defeat: “They just put some hits together, that’s all. You’ve got to match their pitching and if you don’t match their pitching, the game can get away. And it got away from us.”
One of the best player’s Ortiz looked pleased with his side’s comprehensive win, the more it has propelled them top spot in the East. “I felt normal. Everything was good. Early in the season we didn’t do well against nobody. But we’ve got a good team that knows how to compete.”
Boston have gone .612 so far this season, record which includes 79 wins and 50 losses. The victory over Rangers was their second in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 41st on the road. On the other side, Texas remain top spot in the West, but have closed the gap against Los Angeles Angels to 2.5 they have gone .565 this term, including 74 wins and 57 defeats, the loss to Red Sox being their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 25th at home.
Philadelphia Phillies 4 – 7 New York Mets
Phillies were stunned by Mets last night at the Citizens Bank Park where the hosts were led throughout the entire meeting. New York started the game with a four point quick lead they managed to hold until the end. Duda grounded into fielder’s choice to second as Pagan brought the first lead in the first term, with Wright getting out at second and Tejada to third.
Evans, who fired a 424 footer, Tejada and Duda then made it four as things started to look very complicated for the leaders who could only cut deficits from then on. Victorino thus singled to center allowing Ruiz and Martinez to make it 2-4, while Victorino scored a third one from Utley’s singling in the same second term.
Mets broke back in the third term through Wright who fired a 375 foot homerun, while the same Wright hit a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth one, permitting Pagan to propel his side three points atop of the sleeping Philadelphia.
Finally, Mets alst scored in the fifth term through Bay who made it 7-3 after Evans doubled to center. Finally, Phillies were given a meaningless late point by Utley who cut the deficit to three points, which also was the last sparkle moment for the hosts.
Mets lie second from the bottom in the East with a .473 record including 61 wins and 68 losses, the victory over Phillies being their third in the past ten games and 36th on the road where they still remain positive.
