Most people understand basic internet security such as not opening emails and attachments from people you don’t know and not following unknown links but do you know what to do with your smartphone?
Viruses known as bots can be installed onto your smartphone via infected apps, music and emails, and from there the bot can monitor and track your every move on the device. The bot will then try to spread the virus to other users by sending texts and emails to your contacts. With the way we use our mobile phones changing it is important that you treat your smartphone the same as you would your laptop or computer.
Smartphone viruses increased by 46% in 2010, so staying safe is more important than ever before. Here are some tips on how to protect your smartphone from the increasing number of viruses in circulation.
1) Install official updates
If you have an Apple iPhone or Google Android device you probably receive updates to the operating system quite frequently. It is important that you keep your phone up to date with these updates as they often include additional security and patches for recently discovered viruses, so always run your device on the latest version.
2) Check out app reviews
Smartphone users are obsessed with apps, they are what make our phones fun, exciting and unique. There is an app for absolutely everything these days, from games and currency converters, to photo editing software and sounds. Your phone should come with an official app store, whether it is the Google Android Market or the iPhone App Store. It is important that you only purchase apps from these official channels, although malware can still sneak on, so make sure you check out reviews first before downloading.
3) Wireless communication
Most smartphones now come with wireless communication features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and many users leave these on constantly. If you are not using them, turn them off to prevent hackers gaining access to your smartphone. Also, make sure that your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have passwords and your phone does not automatically allow connections.
4) Backing up
Just as you need to back up your data on your computer or laptop, you need to on your smartphone too. There are apps available which you can download that back up your phone’s contents and can even remotely wipe the data once you report it lost or stolen.
