Belgian Grand Prix, setting a one minute and 50,321 second time after 22 laps spent on the track. Michael Schumacher, who had won the early session, was 1,601 seconds slower than the Aussie.
Webber, who has not won a title this season, his best performance including a second podium position in Turkey, was followed by former world champions Fernando Alonso, who set a 0,140 second gap against the leader. Jenson Button, winner of the Canadian and Hungarian Grand Prix, was the third quickest with a 0,449 second gap, while his team mate Lewis Hamilton, who is chasing his third title of the year, came just 0,068 second behind him.
Hamilton was very close to damaging the car after losing control at a curve. The Briton had just changed his tyres, but the new ones did not seem to suit the wet track, something which could have led to a serious incident. “There was a huge river right the way across the track. I must have been doing 150mph and had a huge tank-slapper. I’m lucky I was awake to correct it or it would have been all four wheels the front wing and the rear wing. I’m glad I was on form,” said the driver after the session.
He managed though to be the fourth fastest at the Spa, being followed by Felipe Massa, who did a much better job than in the first practice and who came 0,897 seconds behind Webber. Nico Rosberg, who had come second in the first session, was just under a second behind the same Aussie.
Five drivers came well beyond a second, including Sergio Perez of Sauber, but also current world leader Sebastian Vettel, who set a poor 1,469 second gap against his team mate. Five other drivers came more than two seconds behind Webber, among whom Kamui Kobayashi and Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi.
Two of the biggest surprises were provided by Heikki Kovalainen, who was 5.881 seconds slower than the leader, and Vitaly Petrov of Renault, who was the slowest driver on the track. Renault have failed to shine too bright as they have set poor times this weekend. Russian’s team mate Bruno Senna came 3,514 seconds behind Webber, the 17th best time.
Vettel is chasing his seventh title of the season as the German have grabbed just a fourth place this season. He has won six races, picked four second-places in China, Canada, Great Briton and Hungary earlier this month. His only podiumless place came at home in Germany.
Hamilton declared that once put under pressure, the Red Bull driver could lose the pace and thus the race. Indeed, Vettel finds it very hard to take control of the race if started behind the top poles. Thus, he has one more training session to prove that he remains a main favorite for the top spot. The third free practice as well as the qualifying are set on Saturday, while the Race starts on Sunday.
