Brawl At the UN
Israeli News reported that an unidentified man on Friday attempted to attack the Turkish Prime Minister during the speech offered by the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas. The Turkish bodyguards intervened immediately and put a stop to the action. Turkish PM was not injured in the process.
Israeli minister of diplomacy and diaspora affairs, who witness the scene in the UN general assembly halls, said that the scene was very violent and was like taken from a movie.
The circumstances related to the incident were still unclear, but Israeli media reports that some think it was related to the tensions between Turks and the Kurds.
This is one version of the story. Another one, recounted by The Independent, is that while the Palestinian president was delivering his speech, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was attending a meeting on a different floor of the UN headquarters.
When he heard the president of the Palestinians, he wanted to enter the General Assembly hall, where the speech was being delivered.
The UN security personnel attempted to bar the access, the Turkish bodyguards reacted immediately, and they engaged in a brawl with the UN guards. They exchanged violent blows, which caused one UN security staff to go to the hospital. The fighting resumed later in the afternoon.
The reason why the UN personnel barred the access is said to have been the fact that the exit door the Turkish PM was attempting to proceed through was not leading to the hall where the Palestinian president was delivering his historical speech.
Erdogan is said to have attempted to proceed, in spite of the explanation offered, and then they engaged in the brawl. A Turkish journalist said for the Turkish Radio and Television that the UN guards had threatened to “stop them with force.”
The Turkish journalist alluded that the UN staff has touched the Turkish PM, which set off the Turkish bodyguards, who got physical.
The scandal continued the next day, as the UN security personnel protest against the apology Ban Ki-moon offered the Turkish officials after hearing about the incident. Ban Ki-moon did not go into details, given the sensitivity of the problem, but details of the incident appeared on UN-related blogs.
In a mail from UN staff’s union to the UN’s head of security it is said that the UN personnel has been dealing with the violent nature of the Turkish security detail all week long. The union members said that the Turkish bodyguards aggressed UN officers, used ministerial ID’s for access, and assaulted an officer in other incident than the one involving the Turkish PM.
The union recommended them to file complaints by the American authorities about these incidents, after filming the bruises left by the meeting with the Turks.
The UN staff placed a half a dozen security guards on administrative duty pending an investigation into their involvement in the brawl with the Turkish security detail.
