Host Rebecca Marino has secured a second term berth after eliminating conational Stephanie Dubois 6-2, 6-4 in the Quebec debut to meet either Gail Bordsky or Aleksandra Wozniak in the next round.
Marino captured the victory in one hour and 16 minutes, breaking her opponent four times. Dubois could only convert one out of four break points, leaving the court with a 52 first serve percentage and a poor 26 return one. Marino fired 14 aces past her compatriot against whom she won 50 percent of first serve balls, 48 of returning ones and 64 of service points.
“I would like Aleks to win. It would be really nice just to get the both of us out there… you’d be guaranteed a Canadian through to the next round!… I always enjoy coming back here, just because it’s where I got my first WTA match win a few years ago. And everyone is so nice - it kind of holds a special place in my heart,” said the world number 50 Marino.
The same day seventh seed Irina Falconi eased past Alison Riske 6-3, 6-3, needing just one hour and 25 minutes to make the progress. The Italian broke her opponent five times in 11 tries, finishing the game with a 53 first serve percentage, a 54 return one and three aces.
As for the American, Riske came up with a 63 first serve percentage, a 39 return one, seven double faults and two break point conversions. Falconi will next meet either Marina Erakovic or Caroline Garcia from France.
Michaella Krajicek, who follows an early exit at the US Open, made the progress through the second term in Canada after defeating Marie Eve Pelletier 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and 25 minutes. Krajicek converted just a couple of break points, grabbed in each of the two sets. She also fired six aces and won 45 percent of first serve points, 39 of return ones.
As for the Canadian, Pelletier pushed the opener into the tie break but Dutch’s late momentum helped her go six points ahead of the crowd favorite, winning the run 7-1. The second set was much easier to grab for Krajicek who converted the only break point in the midst of the term, something which propelled her three games atop of the losing pace Pelletier.
The Canadian finished the game with three double faults, a poor 17 return percentage and a 57 service one. Next up for the Dutch is either Julie Coin of France or Anna Tatishvili from Georgia.
Heather Watson has also impressed with a two set progress when the Briton eased past Anne Kremer of Luxemburg 6-2, 6-4. The youngster needed just one hour and a half to secure the second term berth, breaking her opponent six times in nine tries and saving nine out of 12 coming from the opposite side.
Watson won 54 percent of first serves, 57 of returning balls and 56 of the total points, compared to her opponent whose showing included a 69 first serve percentage, a 44 return one and three breaks. Both players committed three double faults, each but it was the Briton to keep a reasonable gap against her opponent failed to take a lead. Watson will next face the winner between Elena Bovina of Russia and tough Sofia Arvidsson from Sweden.
Melinda Czink needed three sets to make the progress into the second round, beating Kathrin Woerle 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The Hungarian also needed one hour and 40 minutes to secure the second term berth. She broke her opponent five times and saved three out of eight break points from Woerle who provided an impressive play in the second term when she managed to build a five game lead to threaten with a consistent late momentum.
Against the second set run, the German fell three games behind Czink who set the pace throughout the entire decider winning the meeting thanks to a couple of break point conversions. Czink will next face either top seed Daniel Hantuchova, who has won the Pattaya City event, or Ajla Tomljanovic from Croatia.
On Tuesday, second favorite Lucie Safarova thwarted Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-1 in 51 minutes to play the winner between Melanie Oudin and Andrea Hlavackova in the second round. The Czech converted five out of 14 break points and did not allow the American build any break point chance.
Safarova finished the game with a 43 first serve percentage, five aces, a 53 return percentage and two double faults, while her opponent came up with a 67 first serve percentage, a poor 17 return one and three double faults.
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova will make her debut against Shuai Zhang of China, while Mirjana Lucic is to face American Jamie Hampton.
