Simon reaches final eight in Thailand
World number 13 Gilles Simon has reached the last eight round in Thailand after beating Yen Hsun Lu in three sets 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. The French needed nearly three hours to pass the test and will next meet Matthias Bachinger who follows a two set win against host Danai Udomchoke.
The two exchanged two breaks in the opener which needed a tie break to be decided. Simon was thus pushed into the breaker by week’s revelation Lu, who had previously ousted Joao Souza. The Taipei player won the breaker at four and threatened even with a two set win in the second term. But Simon recovered the deficit in the next round when he converted two out of three break points to push the game into a third set decider.
Finally, the last set saw the French both keep the service sheet clean and pick one more break which helped him to clinch the victory and make the progress. Simon finished the game with a 59 first serve percentage, a 37 return one, a double fault and four breaks out of nine chances. He also won 63 percent of service points and hit 12 aces, compared to his opponent who came up with a 62 first serve percentage, 11 aces, five double faults and a 37 return percentage.
Reflected Simon after the game: “To play for three hours at this intensity was really hard. He played really well. He wasn’t missing, serving hard and returning well. I really had the impression that I had to play to my maximum on every point for a chance to win. I am lucky to have won this match. I am very happy.”
Next up for the French is Matthias Bachinger who has made a two set progress into the best eight phase. The German beat Danai Edomchoke of Thailand 7-6, 6-3, needing nearly one hour and a half to grab the victory. The two exchanged four breaks in the opener but it was the German to pick the first lead thanks to a late one.
Concerning the second set, it saw Bachinger improve his play and grab three more breaks. He also conceded a service but that did not stop him from setting a three game lead and build the clear win. The German, who had previously ousted Greg Jones of Australia, came up with a 64 first serve percentage, a 49 return one, eight aces, a double fault and a 62 service percentage.
He also converted five out of 11 break points, compared to his opponent’s three breaks, a 38 return percentage, three double faults and a 69 first serve percentage.
One of the big surprises of the day came from Jarkko Nieminen who stunned eighth seed Robin Haase in two similar sets, 7-6, 7-6. The Finnish won the first breaker at the death by only to mini breaks, but had an easier life in the second one which he won at four.
Jarkko won 74 percent of first serve points, 36 of return ones, hit three aces and committed a double faults. He also converted three out of four break points and 64 percent of service points, compared to the Dutch whose showing included 11 aces, four double faults, a 36 return percentage and a 64 service one. Nieminen will next play either second seed Gael Monfils or his opponent Santiago Giraldo, who follows a remarkable performance in Bucharest.
Tobias Kamke has also come up with a big surprise as the German ousted eighth seed Pablo Andujar in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. The German needed nearly one hour to set the progress as he only allowed his opponent to convert a service.
Kamke kept the sheet clean the entire opener and was very close to doing the same thing in the second term. Andujar, whose showing was simply unrecognizable, was unable even to build a break point, conceding one of the biggest defeats of the season.
The German finished the game with some impressive statistics which included a 59 return percentage and a 69 service one. Kamke also won 60 percent of first serve points, committed a double fault and converted five out of seven break points.
On the other side, the Spaniard had a 64 first serve percentage, a poor 31 return one, three double faults and a 41 service percentage. The German will next meet underdog Go Soeda who edged Karol Beck after losing the opener, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the first day.
Soeda lost the first set after conceding a couple of service to the German who started the game as favorite. Things got much more complicated for him when the Japanese leveled the score thanks to an impressive tie break which he won at zero.
As for the third set, it saw the same Soeda push the decider to another breaker he managed to win at four. Go finished the game with a 60 first serve percentage, a 60 service one, five double faults, an ace and a 37 return percentage. He also converted two out of seven break points, compared to his opponent’s 58 first serve percentage, 11 aces, 40 return percentage and four double faults.
Donaldo Young has reached the quarter finals after defeating fourth seed Guillermo Garcia Lopez whom the American edged in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Young, who is now in front of one of his best season performances, won the opener very easily, breaking the Spaniard twice in the first set.
The two then went head to head until the breaker which the favorite won with ease, something which helped him to push the game into a third set decider. Young grabbed a couple of more breaks in the last term and only conceded a service. A late break pushed the American two games atop to win the victory in nearly two hours and a half.
Young’s showing included a 63 first serve percentage, a 43 return one, two aces and a couple of double faults. He also won 66 percent of service points and converted five out of 12 break points. On the other side, Lopez came up with a 59 first serve percentage, a 34 return one, nine aces and two break conversions.
Simone Bolelli is to meet Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of the Thai event after the Italian beat Ernests Gulbis in straight similar sets, 7-6, 7-6 in the first day. The two broke each other once in both sets but it was the Italian to take a couple of three mini break leads in both breakers. Bolelli has thus made a unexpected progress into the next term.
He finished the game with ten aces, a couple of breaks, a 36 return percentage and a 73 service one. As for the Estonian, Gulbis came up with a 70 first serve percentage, 19 aces, a 27 return percentage and a 64 service one.
Bolelli’s next opponent Dimitrov eased past fifth favorite Ivan Dodig 6-2, 7-5 to set his first season meeting with the Italian. The Bulgarian won the first set thanks to a couple of breaks, but had to struggle a bit more in the second term when the Croat threatened with a breaker. Fortunately, Dimitrov managed to close the meeting after two sets, winning the last term thanks to yet another late break.
Overall, Dimitrov won 69 percent of first serve points, a 44 of return ones and hit four aces. He also came up with a 73 service percentage and four break point conversions. Dodig’s performance featured a 59 first serve percentage, three aces, a double fault and a poor 27 return percentage.
