World champion Sebastian Vettel set the best time in the third free practice of the Italian Grand Prix, stopping the clock at one minute and 23,170 seconds.
The German spent 18 laps on the track, being followed by team mate Mark Webber who is still chasing his first title of the season and who came 0,364 seconds slower than the world leader. Felipe Massa impressed with a one minute and 23,268 seconds. The Brazilian set a much better time than in the second training session and was followed by both McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Hamilton, winner of the Chinese and German Grand Prix, set a 0,571 second gap against Vettel, while his compatriot was 0,617 seconds slower than the same German. Mercedes grabbed back to back position with Nico Rosberg coming sixth, 0,705 seconds slower than the fastest driver, and Michael Schumacher setting a 0,944 second gap.
Former world champion Fernando Alonso failed to shine too bright within the practices, coming eighth with a 0,963 second delay. The Spaniard was followed by Force India’s Adrian Sutil and Paul Di Resta who were nearly one second a half slower. Renault also picked back to back positions with Senna coming 11th and Vitaly Petrov 12th.
Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi were the first to set a 2+ second gap, being followed by Williams’ Rubens Barrichello, Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi. Pastor Maldonado came 18th, while Lotus’ Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen were more than four seconds behind Vettel.
Finally, Vitantino Liuzii from Hispania and TImo Glock from Virgin set a 5,271 second and 5,792 second gap respectively, the last position belonging to Daniel Ricciardo from Hispania who was 7,146 seconds slower than the German leader.
Vettel is chasing his eighth title of the season, the most recent one dating from Belgian GP. The German has plenty of chances to defend his champion title this year as he sits 92 points above his main follower and team mate Webber who has not won a title so far this term, but who is just ten points ahead of Fernando Alonso who won the British GP.
This weekend, Jenson Button announced he will spend yet another season with McLaren. The Briton has won two titles this year in Canada and Hungary. Overall, the team has grabbed four titles including Lew Hamilton’s successes in China and Germany. Button is just three points ahead of his follower Lewis.
Said McLaren’s Whitmarsh: “Jenson’s done some of the most spectacular drives in the history of Formula 1 this year. And I think he’s capable of even more… We’re just talking about it. I don’t think there’s any rush to go to a single year contract. The nature of a contract is not something we are going to talk about publicly.”
The qualifying takes place this afternoon, while the race is scheduled on Sunday.
