Donald Tusk Wins Elections in Poland

Results in Polish polls indicate that the prime minister Donald Tusk has won, being the first prime minister in this country since the fall of the Communist regime to win a second term in a row.
Donald Tusk, who represents the centre-right Civic Platform, is said to have won, after the counting of 99 percent of the votes, by 39 percent, while his opponent, nationalist-conservative Law and Justice party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the brother of the late Lech Kaczynski, the former president of Poland, who died in a terrible accident on April 10, 2010, scored 30 percent of the votes.
Tusk’s victory was hailed by the representatives of the investor community as a sign of stability of the largest Eastern European member of the European Union, especially in such a time for the European economy, even though Fitch rating agency urged Poland to put its public finances in order.
Palikot’s Support Movement, a party that made its scores by attacking the Roman Catholic Church, which is very powerful in Poland, and promoting the gay rights and the use of light drugs, also scored a 10 percent of the votes.
Roman Catholic Church was not the only target in the political campaign in Poland, as Law and Justice party attempted to play the anti-German feeling of some Poles, especially elderly ones, when the leader of the party Jaroslaw Kaczynski lashed out at the German chancellor Angela Merkel, whom he accused of trying to keep Poland into a subservient state, which prompted Donald Tusk and his party to argue that Germany was the best political partner of their country.
Political analysts consider that the vote on Sunday shows that democracy has come to age in Poland.
Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski is expected to invite Donald Tusk to form a new government, after he observed that the winning prime minister is on the fast track to form a new coalition.
The Civic Platform is about to win 206 seats in the Sejm, the Lower House of the Parliament, out of 460, while the Peasants’ Party, an ally of the Civic Platform, is expected to win some 30 seats. In the Senate, Tusk’s party won 62 seats out of 100, which is a great victory.
This would help him rebuild the same coalition in power for the last four years, which created one of the most stable economies in Europe in a time of global financial turmoil. It is expected that the post-Communist Democratic Left Alliance, which scored 8 percent, be called to support the new coalition.
The news of the victory of the coalition that ruled Poland for the last years was well received in the financial world, with the Polish currency rising with 1.1 percent against euro on Monday, the bonds firming and the Warsaw stock exchange index rising by 1.6 percent.
In a note, the Danske Bank announced that they expected the new government to be formed fast and the economic reforms to continue at a rate that would permit Poland the anticipated growth.
The victory of the Civic Platform is the first victory of the ruling party in a EU country since the global crisis began in 2008. Portugal, Latvia, Denmark and Ireland saw the victory of the opposition and the defeat of the ruling parties, after the economic measures applied.
Tusk, 54, a pragmatic liberal conservative who had an involvement with the famous Solidarity movement that led to the liberation of Poland of Communism, is dedicated to integrating Poland into the European Union, to supporting the eurozone and the admission of his country to this zone.
On the international level, he has personal ties with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and has kept a diplomatic attitude toward Russia, after years of provoking the eastern powerful neighbor.
Conversely, Jaroslaw Kaczynski advocates the halt of privatization, a higher taxation of the wealthy people and a more combative stance toward Russia and the EU, which has sparked unease among the investor community.
Poland has been holding the rotating presidency of the European Union since June 1, and has pledged to help eastern European countries further their integration to the European Union.
