Suarez, Carroll give Reds clear win
Liverpool won the 216th Merseyside derby against Everton when the Reds beat David Moyes’s side 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Goodison Park stadium. Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez scored the only two goals of the game, both coming with 20 minutes left in the second term.
A controversial moment saw Rodwell concede a red card amid the first half for a tough challenge on Suarez. Liverpool, who have already lost two games so far this season, got the first chance in the second minute when the Reds earned a free kick inside the visitors’ half which Everton eventually cleared with some ease.
Moyes’s side also earned an early corner after Marouane Fellaini’s range shot was deflected of the target.Suarez was very close to opening the score in the sixth minute when the Uruguayan penetrated the Goodison box but Doawning’s cross was intercepted by one of Everton’s defenders. Suarez got a second golden chance in the tenth minute following a perfect action from Kuyt whose delivery was headed by the Uruguayan straight at keeper Howard.
Everton broke back two minutes later through Distin who fired it over the bar. Previous to the action, Cahill had had his header blocked by Reds defense. The away side got another opportunity in the 15th minute when Saha hit it just wide from good position in what should have been a difficult test for Reina, if  not an opener for the blue jerseys.
Rodwell left the pitch early in the 23rd minute when the Everton midfielder was cautioned by the referee with a straight red card following an ugly foul on Suarez. Liverpool had a dangerous cross blocked in the 31st minute by Hibbert who delayed the hosts’ opener. Liverpool were even gifted a penalty with two minutes left in the first half.
Jagielka took down Suarez inside the box as the referee showed the white spot. Kuyt took the responsibility for the shot but it was Howard to make a tremendous save to deny the Dutch. Adam also mocked a big chance in the last minute of the first term. The midfielder was perfectly picked around the box only to hit the bar and make Dalglish go out of his mind.
The half time went scoreless but the first goal had become a matter of time. As for the second term, it started with Luca’s early booking. The Reds midfielder was cautioned by the referee for a foul on Saha. Saha got his first chance of the second term in the 52nd minute following a lovely personal action from Fellaini who found Cahill around the box area. Cahill then fed Saha whose finish went wide of the post.
Liverpool broke back just one minute later through Carroll whose header was cleared away by Saha. The same Carroll came up with another great finish to which keeper Howard was equal at the death. David Moyes then introduced Drenthe for Coleman, while Kenny Dalglish replaced Adam and Downing with Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy respectively.
Moyes made another move in the 70th minute when Osman made way for Phil Neville. Just one minute later Liverpool broke through and opened the score through Andy Carroll. Bellamy picked Enrique in good position only to deliver a superb cross for Carroll whose half volley went past keeper. Moyes replied with a third change as Apostolos Vellios was preferred to Hibbert.
With eight minutes left in the second term, Suarez came with the second one. The Uruguayan lost the ball inside the box but his determination saw him recover it and put it past Howard, also following a poor defending from Disting. Dalglish introduced Jordan Henderson for Lucas with two minutes left as Reds were heading towards a clear win.
The game finished with Gerrard’s range shot which missed the target inches. Despite the win, Liverpool remain just behind Chelsea, taking the fifth position with 13 points, the same as the Blues. As for Everton, they are 11th with seven points, having Wolverhampton and Arsenal just behind them.
Said coach Kenny Dalglish after the game: “Sometimes it is difficult to play against 10. It was difficult because you know what you’re going to get from Everton and they put in a great effort to try and keep it at 0-0, or even win it themselves. It was never going to be easy for us, but I think the way we went about our work was a great credit to the players.”
Liverpool will next meet Manchester United on October 15 in what is expected to be the second big test of the term for the Reds. Everton will also have a tough test against Chelsea whom they meet the same day at the Stamford Bridge.
