Welbeck celebrating his second goal
The visitors were the first to put Lindegaard under pressure as Elliott Bennett saw his shot deflected into the corner by Phil Jones. Norwich were allowed to build yet another surprising action in the 14th minute when Anthony Pilkington attempted to pick Hoolahan only to be denied by Valencia. Morison got his first chance in the 16th minute, following a well developed job on the right the finish of which was struck through Evans’s legs and just wide of the target.
On the other side, United, who were chasing their 19th home win, got their first dangerous chance in the 35th minute when Nani beat his marks on the right to deliver a perfect cross for newly recovered Rooney whose header were just over the bar to the dismay of manager Alex Ferguson. Wayne missed another opportunity two minutes later but the striker failed to find the target from range.
Nani started a personal action in the 44th minute but the Portuguese lost the ball inside the box just before pulling the trigger. The half time went scoreless as United seemed to face some difficulty in their attempt to score the opener. Manchester had a remarkable second half start as Anderson woke up alone in good position only to strike it wide from distance.
Norwich broke back immediately through Pilkington whose finish was blocked at the death by one of Red Devils defenders. Alex Ferguson made his first change after one hour, introducing both veteran Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck for Nani and Mexican striker Hernandez in what would prove to be a very inspired move.
Pilkington was allowed by Valencia to get alone with the keeper but the Danish keeper denied the striker in a one to one confrontation. Lindegaard made a tremendous save to rescue his side form a potential disaster. Just two minutes later, United scored the opener through Anderson who beat Ruddy with a perfect header which followed a corner on the left which Jones delivered back into the six yard box. Rooney also deflected the ball as far as the midfielder and Anderson converted it home from close range.
Welbeck picked his first yellow card in the 71st minute for a foul on Tierney. Norwich made their first changes three minutes later as manager Paul Lambert introduced Andre Crofts and Simeon Jackson. One minute later Noriwch hit the post through the same Pilkington whose volley beat the keeper but refused to go beyond the line.
Scorer Anderson was then replaced by Rio Ferdinand as Alex Ferguson was trying to defend the result. Welbeck got his first opportunity in the 78th minute when Jones delivered a superb cross which the striker failed to connect. Rooney followed him with another big miss after a great persona action developed inside the Norwich box.
Lindegaard denied a golden opportunity for Norwich with six minutes left in the game. Jackson and Morison picked each other on the edge of the box, the latter one saw his tricky shot saved by the Danish in what could have been a shocking end for the Devils. Noriwch used their last substitution in the 86th minute as Lambert introduced Chris Martin for Hoolahan.
Welbeck doubled the lead just one minute later to make things look clear as possible. The striker built a one two combination with Park, the finish of which was struck home past keeper Ruddy. Rooney got another late chance but the striker hit it wide in what should have been a much more difficult test for the keeper, if not a third one for United.
Manchester stay top in the Premier League table with 19 points, being followed by local rivals City who have gathered the same number of points so far this season. As for the newly promoted, Norwich are tenth with eight points, the same as Queens Park Rangers.
Said a delighted Ferguson after the game: “As champions, football fans expect you to turn up and be the best every week but we know football isn’t like that and it was proved today. Norwich’s game-plan worked well for them before we broke them down in the end. They made it difficult and we had to be patient, that’s what the manager said at half-time – move the ball quicker but be patient.”
Manchester will next meet Liverpool on Anfield on October 15, while Norwich host another newly promoted Swansea City the same day.
