Suicide Blast in Jalalabad
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the suicidal car bombing, and said that it was a form of retribution for the burning of Qurans last week, which jolted the Muslim country and claimed the lives of 30 people who died in the protests that followed the announcement of the incident.
On Sunday, the Afghan authorities began a search of a Afghan intelligence service officer accused of having killed two American officers on Saturday, at the Interior Ministry in Kabul. The officers were found in a locker that can only be accessed by officers who know the combination to the lock.
The president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, spoke of the killings on Sunday, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and called for calm. A protester was killed and seven soldiers were wounded on Sunday in a grenade attack at a U.S. base in northern Kunzun province.
The international military personnel working in the Afghan governmental offices were recalled on Saturday for “obvious force protection reasons.” The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killings in the Interior Ministry and added that it was also in retaliation to the burning of the Quran.
A week ago, the U.S. commander of the troops in Afghanistan, general John Allen, apologized for an incidental burning of the sacred book of Islam as the American soldiers were burning the trash from the Bergam Air Base.
On that occasion, among the things brought to the burning pit were some copies of the Quran, which the soldiers retrieve in the cells where insurgents had been incarcerated. By the time Afghan personnel arrived at the place and saw that the book was being burned it was very late, some of the copies being burnt completely, while others were half burnt.
The incident brought a few thousands in the streets of the Afghan cities the same day the announcement was made. The president of the United States, Barack Obama sent a letter to the president of Afghanistan, making an apology for the incident, and insisting that it was without intention.
The president Karzai said that the incident was reflecting that the foreigners did not respect the Afghan people but also insisted on the aspect that those who burnt Qurans were just being ignorant, but that they did not intend to burn the holy book on purpose.
The tensions between the Americans and the Afghan officials hit a breaking point a year ago, when an American reverend proposed the decennial celebration of 9/11 by burning Qurans. The pastor was convinced to renounce his bid by the threat such act would pose on the Americans in Afghanistan.
