IDF Shows Minister the Place of Accident
The Israel Defense Forces launched an investigation into the reasons that led to the killing of five Egyptian policemen last Thursday, as the IDF was chasing some Palestinians who had launched an attack on Eilat, a place at the border with Egypt. The Egyptian policemen were reportedly killed by mistake by IDF, and that compelled the Egyptian authorities to withdraw their representative from Tel Aviv, and demand an apology.
Israel promised to launch an inquiry, and this is exactly what it did, analyzing what actually happened there.
Preliminary reports show that three of the terrorists that perpetrated attacks on Eilat were Egyptian and that IDF did everything in their power to prevent the killing of the policemen.
IDF’s findings have been presented to the Egyptians authorities earlier this week by major general Amir Eshel, head of the general staff’s planning branch, and he even offer them photographic evidence.
In the pictures, the Israeli helicopters are showed attempting to avoid the Egyptian military vehicles and troops at the border, which contradicts the reports of the Egyptian media.
Video from helicopter shows that the Israeli army diverted fire from the Egyptian troops toward open areas where the sniper fire of the terrorists came from. The terrorists positioned themselves a few dozen meters from the Egyptian troops and directed machine guns toward the Israeli helicopter, and even fired a rocket at it.
Three of the terrorist were confirmed by IDF to be Egyptians, one of them member of a radical group in Egypt, broken out of prison during the Egyptian revolution. He reached Gaza, as many other Jihadists that came to the Palestinian territories to escape prosecution.
These Egyptian terrorists joined the Popular Resistance Committees in Gaza and planned attacks together with the Palestinian rebels. IDF offered prove that dozens of Egyptian radicals were in the region of Sinai, helping the Bedouins in the region and setting up terrorist cells.
Egyptian Protest against Israel
IDF report also states that the Egyptian soldiers at the border saw the terrorist snipers before the attacks and did nothing about them, until later when they engaged them. It is not clear yet who fired the shots at the police officers, IDF says, alluding that they could have been killed by the terrorists.
Israel also presented evidence that the IDF received orders to proceed with caution, so that the Egyptian soldiers may not be hurt in the process. IDF said they had all this evidence since last week, but avoided to release them then, fearing that this would embarrass the Egyptian military. They also did not want the subject to become a trivial matter as the media disputations of the responsibility would have trivialized it.
IDF did however sent the information to the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, and the military leaders demanded that general Eshel present them in Cairo. Some of the results were already published on Wednesday, in a newspaper.
Israeli authorities released the information that the Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu, defense minister Ehud Barak and other ministers of the cabinet decided that no further retaliation would be exacted on the Jihad Islamist, so that the Egyptian public may not increase pressure on the interim government to annul the agreements with Israel.
In fact, Israel was capable of thwarting some of the attacks staged by the terrorist without the necessity of crossing border into Egypt.
Neither Egypt nor Israel mentioned anything about the apology the interim government requested of the Jewish state.
