The former European champions dominated the game at all facets, but despite that, they conceded two odd goals. Ozil opened the score early in the eighth minute with a shot from the edge of the box into the left hand post past keeper Gratzei. Klose shaved the ball, but the goal belonged to the Real Madrid star. The same Ozil doubled the lead in the 23rd minute following a tremendous through ball the striker put it home after b eating the keeper, as well.
Five minutes later, the World Cup semi finalists extended the lead to three through Podolski who beat Gratzei with a great shot from inside the box after being perfectly served by Badstuber. Austria first cut the deficit three minutes before the half time. Arnautovic made it 1-3 with a suepr header past keeper Neuer and into the right hand post.
Just two minutes into the second part, Ozil made it four after a long distance run which saw the forwarder beat both his mark and the keeper with a perfect strike from ten yards, making things look clear as possible.
Germany’s joy would not last but four minutes, Harnik broke back with a powerful shot from the edge of the box after being smartly served by a team mate. His volley beat Neuer for the second time, but still the Austrians were far from a leveler.
The last two goals came in the last five minutes for Germany. Schurrle made it 5-2 in the 84th minute with a well placed shot from the verge of the box straight into the left hand bottom corner. Finally, Gotze scored the sixth one with one minute remaining following a developed action on the right the finish of which saw the newly introduced beat Gratzei with a half volley into the left hand post.
Low’s side lead the group A with 24 points, which includes eight victories in eight games. Austria fell fourth in the standings with seven points, the loss to Germany being their fourth this preliminary round. They are also six points behind second placed Turkey and five behind third Belgium.
Said Low: “We managed to qualify comfortably – we could have not done so earlier. We must now keep up the intensity in the next few games… When you play as aggressively as we do, then you also concede the odd goal. Today we twice failed to act properly in defense. I think the Austrians only shot on goal twice.”
