Yankees move back top after Jays win
Blue Jays grabbed a two point early lead only to be left one point behind in the next five terms. Escobar was the first to put his side into a one point advantage after Bautista singled to right in the opening round. Thames doubled the lead just minutes later after Lind hit a sacrifice fly to left, but that was the best the visitors could do.

Chicago Cubs 1 – 3 Pittsburgh Pirates
Cubs lost their second straight game after being beaten by Pirates yesterday at the Wrigley Field where the hosts lost an early lead brought by Pena who hit a 420 foot homerun in the second round. Pittsburgh broke back in the third inning through Presley who leveled the score after Harrison singled to center.
The visitors grabbed their first advantage minutes later through Walker who scored the second point for Pittsburgh after Jones hit a ground rule to right. The next three terms went scoreless for both teams, while the seventh one saw the same away side go two points ahead of their opponents thanks to Presley third point which also brought Pirates’ 32nd away win after Tabata singled to right.
Said Pena: “I said this before, just the fact that I’ve been able to hit one in the big leagues is a blessing to me and I’m very grateful for it, let alone hit so many.”
Pittsburgh remain fourth in the Central Conference with a .457 record which features 63 wins and 75 losses, the victory over Cubs being their third in the past ten games and 32nd on the road. Chicago stay four gamesback behind Pirates with a .428 record featuring 59 wins and 79 losses, the defeat to Pittsburgh being their second in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 38th at home.
St. Louis Cardinals 8 – 11 Cincinnati Reds
Reds stunned Cardinals yesterday at the Busch stadium thanks to a five point early lead which secured the visitors their momentum throughout the entire meeting, despite being leveled at one point. the first term went scoreless for both sides, while the second one saw Alonso and Stubbs put their side into a two point advantage.
Phillips then doubled to left, allowing Francisco to extend the lead to three points, while Renteria singled to right for Phillips’ fourth point. Things got much worse for the hosts who would conceded yet another point from Renteria who made it 5-0 after Bruce singled to right.
St. Louis replied with a five point rally, leveling the result in the fifth term and threatening with a late comeback. Freese singled to right for Holliday’s first point. Molina then grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop and Berkman cut the deficit to three points. The third term brought the same home side one more point through Jay who made it 3-5 with Pujols getting to third.
The fourth inning went scoreless for the two squads, while the fifth one saw St. Louis even the situation to five. Furcal hit a 366 foot homerun, while Jay tried to resuscitate his side with a leveler. But Reds broke back when counted the most as Frazier brought back the minimal lead in the sixth term with a 352 foot homerun.
St. Louis leveled back through Freese who made it 6-6, only to be led 8-6 in the next minutes. Alonso hit a 387 foot homerun, allowing Bruce to score the eighth one for Cardinals. The eighth showed Cardinals struggling for yet another comeback but they could only cut deficits.
Furcial singled to right for Molina’s seventh point, but Cinncinnati answered back with a three point play. Farncisco hit a 426 footer and Bruce and Cairo made it 11-7. Holliday closed the meeting with a 430 foot homerun in the ninth as Reds were celebrating their 31st away win.
Reds are third in the Central with a .493 record including 68 wins and 70 losses, the victory over Cardinals being their fifth in the past ten games. On the other side, St. Louis remains second with a .529 record which features 73 wins and 65 defeats, the loss to Reds being their fourth in the past ten games and 32nd at home.
